ENDOMETRIOSIS
Endometriosis
It is a chronic genetic and hormonal disease in which the endometrial tissue that is usually lining the inner part of the uterus grows in areas outside of it. This disease is frequently related to infertility. For this reason, getting pregnant is more difficult in these cases.
How is endometriosis diagnosed?
Endometriosis is a hormonal and chronic disease that cannot be diagnosed in a routine of pap smear, ultrasound scan or physical examination. It can only be diagnosed by laparoscopy.
Surgery may be recommended if you have a severe pain that does not get better with other treatments. There are two treatments:
- Laparoscopy is used to diagnose endometriosis and remove all implants and the scar tissue (adhesions), This treatment can partially or totally relieve pain in many patients for years, but it cannot cure the disease.
- Hysterectomy is used for the uterus removal, but only if in some cases you have severe symptoms that have not improved with previous laparoscopies or with medications, and also if you do not want to have kids in the future. This is the best option for a cure.
